Grand Canal

The Yangtze River intersects the Grand
Canal at Zhenjiang, forming the biggest golden cross
water system in China. The length of the Grand Canal
in Zhenjiang is 42 kilometers. Since the Tang Dynasty,
Zhenjiang has been an important port and transportation
hub. The poem “a boat flowing three thousand miles
sees ten thousand houses with lights along the river”
shows a picture of flourishing Zhenjiang along the Grand
Canal. Currently, the five-kilometer Grand Canal across
downtown has become a scenic view belt for local citizens.
So it’s a good place for you to have a walk, take
a rest and boating, while seeing the local conditions
Xijin Ancient
Street

Xijin Ancient Street, located at the foot
of Yuntai Mountain, the south of the city, was originally
built in the Six Dynasty and flourished during the Tang
and Song Dynasties. It has been awarded the Distinguished
Proteciton Project of Cultrual Heritage of United Nations.
There are a lot of ancient relics in the street such
as lifesaving organization, Guanyin Cave, Xijin Ancient
Ferry, etc. The most-protected and oldest stone pagoda
of China stands across the street, which is also the
natinal key protective relic unit. There are more than
150 shops of differet kinds along Xijin Ancient Street.
The harmonious blends of religions, cultures,nature
and humans fully appear here.
The wheel traces on the stone boards show the change
of long history and tell you the story that happed in
the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. When
you come to Xijin Ancient Street, you will feel as if
you are having a stroll in an out-door history museum.
Former British Consulate
At the intersection of Xijin Ancient Street and Boxian
Road, there stands a western-style architectural complex
of five buildings. This is the national key protective
relic unit------Former British Consulate. The main buliding
is of East Indian style and the other four are of Gothic
style. Now it belongs to Zhenjiang Museum.
Hengshun Vinegar Factory
The smell of vinegar will greet you, when you enter
into Zhenjiang Hengshun Vinegar Factory. Zhenjiang Hengshun
Vinegar Factory was founded in the Qing Dynasty (1840),
which is the cradle of Chinese vinegar industry. It
is also among the list of first batch of National Intangible
Cultural Heritage.
Hengshun vinegar needs to be produced via more than
40 procedures and takes over 60 days. The unique skills
of production make Hengshun vinegar own five unique
characteristics “color, fragrance, acid, alcohol
and strength”. Here, you can learn about the artistry
of making vinegar and witness the birth of this “acid
sauce”.
Forest of Steles at Jiao Mountain
As a national key protective relic unit, 200-meter-long
cliff inscriptions and forest of steles in Jiao Mountain
Cliff is the second biggest forests of steles in China,
among which, “Yihe Inscriptions” is worthy
the most and looked upon as the ancestor of calligraphy
by successive calligraphers. Coming here, the forest
of steles will show you the calligraphy of past dynasties.
In Jiao Mountain, the harmonious beauty which combines
the natural, cultural and human scenic spots is worth
seeing.
Stone sculptures of Southern
Dynasties
Within Dan Yang of Zhenjiang City, there are 13 imperial
tombs of the Nan Dynasty. The stone-carved TianLu, ornamental
columns, Kylin, etc in front of tombs, which are national
key protective relic units, will show you the great
value of art of ancient superb craftsmanship. Seeing
these vivid and delicate stone sculptures, you can discover
the ancient Chinese art treasures.
